Round & About

Runswick Bay is tucked away and tranquil, but within easy reach of so many other wonderful coastal and moorland locations and attractions. A selection of leaflets for local attractions is in the dining room.

Whitby

Whitby is just 8 miles to the south, along the scenic A174 coastal road, with spectacular views of the Sandsend/Whitby bay as you drop down Lythe Bank.  Whitby is famous as a vibrant old fishing town, overlooked by dramatic Whitby Abbey (the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Count Dracula tales) and its fascinating English Heritage visitor centre; the Captain Cook Museum; and renowned for fish and chips (including the celebrated Magpie Café); plus a whole range of festivals and seasonal activities.

Staithes

The picturesque fishing village of Staithes lies just north of Runswick Bay, and can be reached by the cliff top footpath (around 1.5 hour's walk), or road.  Further north is Saltburn, a favourite for surfers, with equipment hire from the promenade (opposite the pier).

Nearby attractions

Just inland is Goathland (aka Aidensfield, in the popular television series 'Heartbeat') nestling in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and the renowned North Yorkshire Moors Railway for a nostalgic steam train trip through the stunning moorland landscape.  Only slightly further afield en route to Pickering lies Dalby Forest with its fantastic cycle routes and trails, and the Go Ape experience.  Real apes feature in Flamingoland, just the other side of Pickering, one of the north's most popular theme parks, with wild rides and even wilder animals in its animal park and zoo.  And of course, Scarborough is just a little further south down the coast, with its many seaside attractions which include the Sea Life Centre.
